Hello, I’m Vilia.

The Redemptive Rebel — When Scars Become Wisdom

I have a little confession to make.

I’ve been called a rebel more than once in my life. And perhaps, looking back, I can understand why.

I have never been particularly good at accepting that something is impossible simply because someone says it is. Especially when it comes to people, their potential, and the possibility of beginning again.

But my rebellion is not against God. Quite the opposite.

I rebel against hopelessness. Against the labels we place on ourselves and others. Against the idea that our past must determine our future, or that age, illness, loss, and life’s disappointments somehow diminish our worth.

I suppose that makes me what I like to call a Redemptive Rebel.

And there is a story behind that.

A little about my journey

I didn’t become a trauma counsellor and life coach because I had all the answers or because life had been particularly gentle with me.

Life has given me my share of unexpected turns, painful experiences, losses, and challenges. I know something about sitting in the ashes of what once was and wondering what comes next. I also know what it means to discover that life can still hold meaning, even when it looks nothing like the life we imagined.

I live with an autoimmune disease, and I have learned that healing is seldom a straight road. Some experiences leave scars. Others leave questions. And some change the way we see almost everything.

Yet here I am, still learning, still growing, and still believing that God is not finished with me.

Apparently I missed the memo

I was born in the sixties — a Baby Boomer, as I often jokingly remind people!

Apparently, that means I should be thinking about slowing down, taking life a little easier, and perhaps learning how to retire gracefully.

Well, I seem to have missed that memo!

Here I am, still studying, still researching, still developing new ideas, and still discovering just how much there is to learn.

And perhaps that is the rebel in me. I simply refuse to believe that growing older means becoming less useful, less curious, or less capable of making a difference.

Besides, Scripture reminds us that we can still bear fruit in old age (Psalm 92:14). And I rather like the thought of that!

From experience to purpose

My working life has taken me through learning, education, training, and human development, and eventually into specialised trauma facilitation and life coaching. Along the way, I became increasingly interested not only in what happens to people, but in what happens within them as they try to make sense of their experiences.

What happens when the things we have carried for years are finally given space to be explored? And how do we begin to recognise the person beneath the pain? Those questions continue to shape my work today.

Through Camphor Resilience Centre, I offer trauma counselling, trauma life coaching, education, and facilitated conversations. My work draws on professional training, years of experience, evidence-informed approaches, and my Christian faith.

Along this journey, the Wardrobe of Love was born. Inspired by Colossians 3, it invites us to explore what we may need to put off and what we can begin to put on as we grow.

The Wardrobe of Love eventually led me further into postgraduate studies in Christian Counselling, opening another chapter in my exploration of faith, trauma, human behaviour, healing, and personal growth.

The more I learn, the more questions I have! Some people might call that hard work. I call it being wonderfully curious about life.

Why the Redemptive Rebel

Because I believe our scars need not be the end of our story. Wisdom can grow from difficult experiences, purpose can emerge after loss, and there is more to a person than the worst thing that has ever happened to them.

Not every painful experience produces growth. Healing cannot be rushed, demanded, or reduced to a positive attitude. Sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is acknowledge that they are hurting. Sometimes it is asking for help. Sometimes it is finding the courage to begin again.

For me, being a Redemptive Rebel means refusing to give hopelessness the final word. We may not be able to change what happened yesterday, but we can begin exploring how we want to live today.

And perhaps, in time, what once wounded us may become part of the wisdom through which we help someone else.

Our scars can become bridges.

And if you are reading this

Perhaps you have arrived here because life has taken an unexpected turn. Perhaps you are carrying something that has become too heavy, feeling stuck in a familiar pattern, or wondering whether there is something more ahead.

Or perhaps you are doing reasonably well but recognise that there are parts of your life you would like to understand, strengthen, or change.

Whatever brought you here, you do not have to arrive with all the answers. I certainly don’t have them all either. I am still a student of life, of people, and of God’s extraordinary grace.

Sometimes we need someone willing to walk alongside us, listen without judgement, ask meaningful questions, and create space for something new to emerge. That is the kind of work I love.

What I can offer is a place where your story matters, your dignity is respected, and your journey is approached with compassion, curiosity, and care.

I counsel because I believe healing is possible. I coach because I believe growth is possible. And I continue to learn because I believe there is always more to discover.

I am Vilia. A Redemptive Rebel. Still growing, still bearing fruit, and still believing that our stories are not finished.

Perhaps yours is ready for another chapter too.

With love,

Vilia Y. Reynolds

Healing is possible. Growth is possible. You are not alone.
