Christian Facilitating Conversations Course

Christian Facilitating Conversations Course

A Christian Care Facilitation Course

Becoming before doing. Learning to serve through presence, listening and love.

Christian Facilitating Conversations™ is a part-time course within CRCTC’s Education, Training & Development (ETD) offering. It supports people in Christian helping roles to develop the character, awareness and practical skills needed to facilitate respectful, thoughtful and supportive conversations.

Helping someone begins with making room for their voice. CFC explores how to listen with care, ask questions that encourage reflection and remain present without taking ownership of another person’s story or decisions.

The course combines Christian formation with practical learning, recognising that how we show up in a conversation matters as much as the skills we bring.

Who is the course for

CFC welcomes people who serve in Christian helping roles, including:

  • Christian and ministry leaders.

  • Counsellors.

  • Chaplains.

  • Pastors.

  • Sunday school teachers.

  • Youth workers.

  • Others whose responsibilities include supporting people within Christian communities.

Participants can explore how the learning applies to their existing responsibilities, while recognising the boundaries of their role and experience.

Becoming before doing

Before asking, “What techniques should I learn?”, CFC invites participants to consider:

“Who am I becoming as a person who helps others?”

Our assumptions, habits and desire to help can influence how we listen and respond. Through guided reflection, participants explore their identity, motives and approach to serving others.

The aim is to develop a posture of humility, compassion, patience, integrity and respect—qualities that shape responsible helping conversations.

The Christian foundation

CFC draws on Colossians 3 and the Wardrobe of Love™ framework: recognising attitudes that hinder relationships and choosing to practise qualities that express Christ’s love.

“Putting on love” becomes practical through listening patiently, responding with gentleness, respecting another person’s dignity and allowing space for reflection.

Faith informs the facilitator’s conduct. Participants are encouraged to avoid imposing interpretations, pressuring disclosure or using spiritual answers to move past an experience before the person has been heard.

What participants develop

The course supports development in areas such as:

  • Self-awareness: Recognising personal assumptions, reactions and helping habits.

  • Presence: Giving attentive, respectful space to another person.

  • Listening: Seeking to understand before responding.

  • Thoughtful questioning: Encouraging reflection without supplying the person’s answers.

  • Respect for choice: Allowing people to express their own understanding and make their own decisions.

  • Ethical boundaries: Recognising responsibilities, limitations and appropriate referral.

  • Reflective practice: Learning from conversations, feedback and practical exercises.

These skills are developed within a Christian understanding of service, dignity and responsible care.

Learning through reflection and practice

CFC combines teaching, guided reflection and practical conversation exercises. Participants have opportunities to examine familiar responses, practise different ways of listening and questioning, and reflect on what they notice.

Paired activities provide opportunities to experience both facilitating and being heard. Feedback supports continued learning and awareness of how a facilitator’s words, timing and presence can influence a conversation.

Personal reflection is approached respectfully. Participants are not required to disclose private traumatic experiences to demonstrate learning.

Beginning with facilitator identity

The foundation module explores the identity of the Christian facilitator, including three central questions:

  • Who am I? Recognising personal identity, strengths and areas for growth.

  • Whose am I? Reflecting on identity in Christ and the character expressed through service.

  • Why am I here? Considering purpose, responsibility and the meaning of helping others.

This foundation connects personal formation with practical conduct in helping conversations.

Responsible helping

CFC encourages participants to recognise the scope of their existing role, work within their competence and seek appropriate guidance or referral when a person’s needs require additional support.

Completing a module recognises learning within CFC. It does not, by itself, confer a professional counselling or therapy qualification or extend a participant’s professional scope of practice.
